Neuropsychiatric symptoms are among the most distressing challenges faced by patients and families in hospice and palliative care settings. This workshop equips nurses and nurse practitioners with practical, evidence-based strategies to assess and manage common conditions—including anxiety, depression, delirium, insomnia, and terminal agitation—through thoughtful pharmacologic approaches. Participants will deepen their understanding of symptom pathophysiology, differentiating overlapping presentations, and selecting appropriate medications tailored to the unique needs of seriously ill patients. Emphasis will be placed on safe prescribing, dose titration, minimizing adverse effects, and aligning treatment decisions with patient goals of care. Through case-based discussion and scenarios, attendees will gain confidence in managing complex neuropsychiatric symptoms, improving patient comfort, and supporting families during progressive stages of serious illness.
